Ephesians 5:22-24, “Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.”
Think
Yesterday, we talked about the difference between the world’s concept of submission and the biblical meaning of this so commonly misunderstood word. It’s vital to our understanding that to submit is simply following the example of Christ as a selfless servant. It’s not oppression; it’s elevation! Keep that in mind as you read this phrase: “Wives, submit yourselves to your own husband…”
What?! Is the Bible saying that women are inferior to men? Is it suggesting that wives must keep their heads down, walk several steps behind their husband, only speak when spoken to, and fan their “better halves” with palm fronds as he watches ESPN? Absolutely NOT!
Again, we must remember the value of godly submission. We have an opportunity to strengthen the one who has committed to us for life. And, as we model Christ’s selflessness, we cheer on and encourage the man in our life – a role that we can fulfill better than anyone else!
But it’s bigger than just us. We are painting a picture for the world – a picture of what submission to Christ looks like. Our obedience becomes a living billboard for people to see, and our influence flows far beyond our immediate family. Therefore, wives and future wives… wear it proud, wear it loud, and unabashedly submit to your husband, to one another, and, above all, to Christ as you fulfill your God-given purpose in your home and in God’s house – the local church!
Act
Whether married or single, consider your most important life roles — spouse, parent, child, friend, employee, church member, citizen, etc. Is there an authority figure to whom you need to be better about submitting? If pride is an issue, ask God to soften your heart as you make every effort to submit “as to Christ.”
Pray
Lord Jesus, Thank You for Your unfailing love for me individually and as a member of Your body, the church. Help me maintain a humble spirit, be selfless, and fulfill my God-given purpose within my various life roles to bring honor to Your name. Amen.
