Read:
Genesis 1:27-28 “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’”
Think:
God made both male and female to bear his image. Both men and women are made in his image and, therefore, have inherent dignity, equality, and worth. We learn in Genesis that of all the things God created, none is more significant than humanity. Men and women stand as equals at the pinnacle of God’s created order. In Genesis 1:27 we read, “God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
Here we recognize that women and men were designed to reflect God’s image over the rest of creation. But just as vital is what lies at the heart of this design. Of all things it is gender: male and female.
Being male or female cannot be modified by human hands; sex is a category of God’s handiwork — his original and everlasting design. As hard as anyone may try to change this reality in his or her own body, the most that can be done is to artificially remove or augment body parts, or use pharmaceuticals to unnaturally suppress the biological and hormonal facts of one’s nature as male or female. In other words, psychology usurps biology; what I feel becomes who I am. When denying this physical and genetic reality, we allow experience to supplant essence, and more importantly, the image of God.
Apply:
The world says, “what I feel is who I am.” Scripture tells us “what God says is who I am.” Is there any area of your life where you are looking through the lens of your feelings, instead of the lens of God’s truth, to shape your perspective? Recognize that the world will confuse and distort reality. Admit that feelings aren’t facts. Refuse to place psychology over biology, and refuse to put either above Scripture.
Pray:
Jesus, you are in control. You created me and you make no mistakes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
