    Tired of It

    Read:

Number 11:4-6 “The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, 'If only we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!'”

    Think:

When they were wandering in the desert, the Israelites experienced some phenomenal blessings from God. One such instance was when they were without food and they woke up and found themselves ankle-deep in the heavenly provision of manna, a tangible expression of God's abundant grace. But it didn’t take long for them to move from gratitude to the moan zone, exhibiting a spirit of negativity, pessimism, ingratitude, and unappreciation. Rather than exclaiming, "Thank you, God! You are awesome and incredible," they wanted to return to their past life of slavery in Egypt, conveniently forgetting the hardships they endured. They lost sight of the blessings of God's deliverance.

Before we are too quick to judge the Israelites, we ought to reflect on our own lives. What occupies our thoughts and focus? Is it the abundance we possess, or do we find ourselves fixated on what we lack?

Self-pity has the uncanny ability to place us at the center of our universe, obscuring our view of God. As followers of Christ, our calling is to put Jesus at the center of our lives. Perhaps today, we need to reevaluate our perspective and put on the corrective lenses of gratitude.

    Apply:

Today, take a moment to list five things you are thankful for. Share this list with someone close to you. Then, take the opportunity to call one person to express your gratitude for their presence in your life.

    Pray:

Gracious God, help me to remember the multitude of blessings you have given me. May my focus remain fixed on you, rather than my circumstances or surroundings. May I choose gratitude over self-pity and acknowledge your goodness. In Jesus' name. Amen.
