    Think Before You Speak

    Read

Ephesians 4:29, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."

    Think

Have you ever said something to your spouse, then been surprised by the way it hurt or angered them? At the time, you may not have even realized you were wrong, but the moment you saw the way it affected your spouse – your error was clear. Marriage is amazing because it reflects who we are more than any other relationship. We see our best and worst qualities reflected in the way we treat and speak to our spouse. Those moments when we are not as patient, as giving, or as kind as we want to be can be frustrating, but they can also be fruitful. If we are open to God's help, He can use those moments as a catalyst for change that are not only beneficial in marriage, but also in many other aspects of life. In order to build up others by speaking the truth in love, we must first place their needs before our own. Then, with thoughtful measure, our words will be filled with understanding, grace, and love.

    Act

You don't have to wait until after your next mistake to make a change. Think about some of the biggest conflicts you've had with your spouse. Evaluate what you can learn about yourself from those conflicts and consider what you can do differently in the future.

    Pray

My Father in Heaven, I thank You for the gift of marriage. Open my heart and mind to the changes You want to make in me. Please use my marriage to show me areas that need improvement and help me take the steps to change my words and actions. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
