    Stewardship of Parenting

Psalm 127:1 “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.”

    Think:

My perception of parenthood underwent a profound transformation when I actually became a parent. Initially, I held this idealistic belief that I would be the perfect parent, capable of meeting all my children's needs. However, as I stood there in the hospital, observing my fragile infants, a profound sense of responsibility and vulnerability washed over me. It was in that moment that I swiftly came to a crucial realization: I didn't want to "own" my children, nor could I possibly fulfill every aspect of their needs. Instead, I embraced the concept of being a steward of my children's lives, as guided by God's calling.

According to Merriam-Webster, stewardship is defined as "the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care." Many parents mistakenly believe they possess ownership over their children, expecting their offspring to exist primarily to fulfill their desires. This approach leads to frustration when children reject their parents' expectations and rebel. A more profound understanding, rooted in biblical principles, suggests that parents are here to guide, educate, and instill values in their children for the purpose of serving God with their lives. These children are "the property of God," not of the parents; parents are, in truth, "stewards" or "managers," and not owners.

The ultimate owner of a child is God himself. He is the sole creator of each child, crafting them for his own divine purpose and glory. Parents are entrusted with the sacred duty of leading their children to know God, recognizing that it is God alone who can truly touch the human heart and illuminate their understanding of him. God has gifted parents the responsibility of pointing their children toward Christ through faithful instruction in his Word and through heartfelt prayers for the precious souls under their care.
