Philippians 2:12-15,
"Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed ... continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose ... so you may be blameless, pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe."
Think
When kids play make-believe, they don't pretend to be mediocre adults. They pretend to be princesses, heroes, celebrities, and famous athletes. They want to emulate greatness. As they get older, the reality of what it means to be a "star" sets in. Even if they show great potential, they soon realize that to be great at anything requires hard work. In today's passage, Paul is saying, "You have star potential!" If we strive to obey God, as Jesus did; if we ‘pretend' to be like Him, we'll shine like stars. We'll set a bright example for those still lost in darkness. But, to do so, we must actively and consistently work
out what God so graciously and mercifully worked
in. This doesn't mean we work to be saved; it means, as recipients of salvation, we work towards emulating Christ. The work God is doing in us is evident in the way we live. We have a healthy fear of God as we stand in awe of His greatness and seek to obey Him. God is constantly at work in your life. It pleases Him to see you succeed. You have star potential! You have the greatness of Christ in you! The question is, are you willing to do the work?
Act
Today's reading begins with the word "therefore." When we see this in Scripture, we should ask, "What's it there for?" In Philippians 2:1-11, Paul powerfully describes the extent of Christ's humility and obedience to the Father. Pray
Heavenly Father, Thank You for sending Jesus to set the ultimate example of humility and obedience as He endured suffering and death on the cross for my salvation. I want others to see Christ in me. I want to be a shining star for Your glory. Help me to work out what You've so graciously worked in so that I may fulfill the powerful purpose You have for my life! In Christ's name, Amen.
