    Shallow Roots

    Read

Colossians 2:6-7 “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”

    Think

Our world is covered by a wide variety of trees. You will find the White Alder Tree if you hike around Northern California, Washington, Idaho, or Montana. The White Alder tree grows by the river. They are lovely, lush trees that can use up to 400 gallons of water daily. However, if they grow in an area where flooding occurs, the root system will be extremely shallow.

Then we go to the deserts of Africa and discover the Shepherd's Tree. This tree is mind-boggling! They have roots up to 230 feet deep and can survive on less than 40 gallons of water per year. Everything they take in is used strategically; they use their nutrients to go deep. The smallest amount of water allows them to be productive because of the depth of their roots.

Strong roots can stabilize. Roots strengthen and roots support against rogue winds of pain and trouble. Strong roots hold us firm when floods of turmoil whip through our lives. It takes stubborn, voracious roots to withstand the wicked gales and keep us standing.

    Apply

Develop the habit of spending daily quiet time with God to develop solid and deep roots. Start small and spend a few minutes today reading the Bible and speaking with God.

    Pray

Jesus, we acknowledge that, apart from you, we can do nothing. Help me to build a strong foundation in your Word. Guide me with your love and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
