Psalm 139:23a, “Search me and know my heart…”
Think
In today’s verse, David asks God to search him and know his heart. God knew David’s shortcomings, so why did David ask God to search him?
The simple fact is that David wanted to know what was in his own heart as well. He wanted God to expose and root out anything that was displeasing. Such transparency and vulnerability take great courage. Not only was David asking God to reveal offenses, but he was also asking for guidance to rid himself of them altogether. David’s devotion and desire for understanding should encourage us to do the same.
What might God reveal if we’re brave enough to ask Him to search us? Bitterness? Jealousy? Selfish motives? Fear? Unforgiveness? Whenever He reveals our sins, it’s the beginning of healing. Are you willing to ask God to shine light into the deepest levels of your heart and make the necessary changes?
Act
Listen to what God is telling you about the condition of your heart. Write down what He brings to your mind, and discover the beginning of true healing!
Pray
Dear God, search my heart and reveal to me anything that displeases You. Remove any hardened attitudes and help me to live in a way that brings honor to Your name. Thank You for Your forgiveness and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
