Read: 

Genesis 3:1 “Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God really say, You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 

Genesis 3:9 “But the Lord God called to the man, ‘Where are you?’”

Think: 

As we step into the new year, it's natural to think about what lies ahead, to question the mysteries and possibilities of 2024. Questions are probably already churning. Lawyers know the importance of a good opening question; they study for months to prepare their opening statement in a case. Interestingly, in Genesis, the opening question in the Bible wasn't from an eager seeker, but from doubt itself—Satan probing the reliability of God's goodness. 

Thinking about Eve's moment of doubt feels relatable; she questioned if God's path was truly the best, if his rules were meant to restrict rather than protect. Despite the abundance he provided, the temptation to want more lingered. It all began with doubts about God's character, fostering the belief that perhaps he was keeping something thrilling from them. Eve, in her dialogue with the devil, wavered in trust. 

Yet, the first question from God wasn't an inquiry seeking information. It was a call to repair the ruptured relationship. God, fully aware of the situation, sought mankind out, not for his knowledge's sake but to mend their connection with him. As we step into the new year, let's allow our challenges and questions to draw us closer to Jesus. Instead of questioning his goodness, lean into his love. 

Apply: 

In the middle of questions and uncertainties we can fix our eyes on him. Read Hebrews 12:1, Philippians 3:14 and Proverbs 2:3-6. Embrace questions that lead to a deeper understanding of God and a stronger relationship with him.

Pray: 

Lord, as I face challenges and questions, help me draw nearer to you. May every uncertainty become an opportunity to deepen my relationship with you. Cultivate in me a heart that searches Scripture and wrestles with questions for growth, understanding and a deeper faith. In Jesus' name. Amen.
