    Look to God

    Read

1 Corinthians 10:13, "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."

    Think

Doing life God's way is always the winning way. The temptations Paul is writing about are sexual immorality and grumbling, which are "common to man" temptations. They are most dangerous in that they aim at our fallen selfishness. Sexual immorality encourages us to nurture a fantasy world where we can indulge in any sexual desire. Grumbling feeds the idea that life should always go our way. The more we entertain this fantasy that the world is our world, the more we want it to be true. We gratify impure sexual desires and ramp up our complaining about life's unfair hardships. In our fantasy world, we run the show. Therefore, we can do and say whatever we want! What should we do when we feel like grumbling or when we are enticed by lustful indulgence? Look for God's escape. Grumbling is not trusting in God's competence. Sexual immorality is not trusting in God's purity. The way of escape is to look to God and trust his word about life. Doing life God's way is always the winning way.

    Act

Write down on a card the verses: Romans 8:28 and Matthew 5:8. When facing sexual temptation, read out loud Matthew 5:8. When facing the temptation to grumble, read out loud Romans 8:28.

    Pray

Heavenly Father, I thank you that your way of escape when facing temptation, of any kind, is the truth of your word. Your word is a light unto my path. In Jesus' name, Amen.
