Read
Ephesians 5:21, “Submit to one another as you would out of reverence for Christ.”
Philippians 2:5–8, “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!”
Think
Submission.
What emotion does this word evoke in you? For many of us, the term “cringe” rushes to mind. Instinctively, the thought of submitting to another party creates feelings of anxiety, anger, or fear to swell inside of us. Why? Because our brains connect the word “submit” to slavery or oppression. But this is a worldly perspective.
In the Christian life, submission is an attitude; it’s a lifestyle bent on selflessness and service. It’s putting others first, extending grace and forgiveness, and living with a posture of humility. It’s not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. And most importantly, it’s an act of faith — surrendering to God’s desires and wants rather than our own. By submitting to God, we trust Him to provide for us and bring about His divine purposes for our lives.
As we see in today’s reading, Jesus “made Himself nothing” and “humbled Himself by being obedient to death,” which, at the time, looked like the most epic fail in history. But thankfully, the grave couldn’t hold Him, and we share in His victory as we strive to grow more and more like Him each day. When we submit to God and one another, we are following in Jesus’ footsteps!
So, model your Savior. Submit to Him and be a selfless servant to others. Not only will your earthly relationships soar to new heights, but you will also put a smile on God’s face as He looks at you and sees Himself!
Act
Focus on the biblical definition of submission this week and make a note of areas in which you need to put God and others before yourself and then “hit submit” as you put it into practice.
Pray
Dear Lord, Thank You for modeling the ultimate act of submission as You died on the cross for my sins and rose again. In awe of your humility, I seek to mirror Your selfless service before others and surrender to Your wants and desires that You may be glorified in me. Amen.
