    Leaning

    Read:

Hebrews 11:21 “By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff.”

Genesis 32:26 “I will not let you go until you bless me.”

    Think:

In the twilight of his life, Jacob found himself in a posture of worship, leaning heavily on his staff. This aged man, unsteady on his feet, required assistance to remain upright. It's likely he couldn't raise his hands in worship, for fear of toppling over. Yet, undeterred by physical limitations, he worshiped with all his heart. Holding onto his staff for support, he bowed his head in reverence, offering adoration to the God who had upheld and sustained him throughout countless years.

This poignant scene contrasts with the more familiar images we associate with Jacob—such as his wrestling match with God or the cunning act of obtaining Esau's birthright. Jacob's life journey was marked by a series of trials and tribulations. His own sons had callously sold one of their brothers into slavery, deceiving their father into believing he had been devoured by a wild beast—an agonizing truth Jacob would later uncover. Eventually, due to a severe famine in Israel, Jacob found himself in Egypt, where a reunion with his long-lost son Joseph took place. In these twilight years, Jacob likely looked back over his life, reflecting deeply on the unwavering faithfulness of God that had guided him through all these trials and blessings.
