These weren't Hallmark or American Greetings cherubs, nor were they cartoonish or figures from Precious Moments. They were something far more profound—a celestial army, God's supernatural warriors. Described in Luke as a "multitude of the Heavenly host," their presence was beyond ordinary. The original Greek text emphasizes their innumerable count and military composition—a formidable force, a heavenly army.
Why did God dispatch this heavenly army to announce the incarnation of his Son? It was a declaration of war against the devil's territory. When God took on human form through Jesus, it marked an invasion into enemy fields. The angels' visit to the shepherds carried the most monumental news ever conveyed to humanity—a divine act of redemption not only for a chosen people but for the entirety of creation, freeing it from the grip of sin's curse.
These mighty, warrior-like angels stood in awe, praising the newborn King. Picture an assembly of muscle-bound "army ranger" angels singing and honoring Jesus, reflecting the glory of heaven itself. Their worship wasn't an ordinary affair; it was a testament to the greatness of the newborn lying in a manger. They comprehended his majesty and worth in ways we can hardly grasp.
This Christmas season, with all the glitter and noise, let's keep our gaze on Jesus—the central figure whom even the mighty angels exalt. Let's imitate their reverence and awe, recognizing the greatness of our Savior, born in a humble stable, yet the King of Kings worthy of all praise.
