Mark 1:34-38 ”Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: 'Everyone is looking for you!' Jesus replied, 'Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.'”

Oswald Chambers wrote, “All of God's people are ordinary people who have been made extraordinary by the purpose he has given them.”

Do you find yourself pulled in by every new, exciting opportunity? I get it, that chase for the next big thing can be all-consuming and draining. Jesus offers us a different path. In Mark 1, as Jesus embarked on his earthly ministry, he performed incredible miracles, healing the sick and casting out demons. Despite the screams for his miracles, Jesus prioritized his mission. Even when the whole town sought his healing touch, he moved on to the next town because preaching the gospel was his primary purpose. 

Healing was undoubtedly good, but it wasn't Jesus’ ultimate “why.” Jesus knew his calling—to preach the gospel and save souls. Everything he did was with that purpose in mind.  

How often do I engage in good deeds at the expense of fulfilling God's greater purpose for my life? Jesus consistently demonstrated the wisdom to stay aligned with his calling. Whenever his miraculous deeds overshadowed his message, he redirected his focus, even if it disappointed some. 

I've begun to reassess my commitments—work, personal projects, side responsibilities. While they're good, not all align with my God-given purpose. I can't be like a cat chasing bright, shiny lights. When I say “no” to distractions, even those that are meaningful to others, it frees me up to stay focused so I can say “yes” to God. Wholeheartedly pursuing our God-given assignments leads us closer to our Savior. By remaining focused and undistracted, we're pursuing the most significant “why” of our lives—our Savior himself. 

Apply: 

Ask God to reveal his purpose for your life. Read Jeremiah 29:13, and seek him earnestly, knowing that when you seek him with all your heart, you will find him and his purpose for your life. 

Pray: 

Jesus, help me to discern your purpose in the midst of the noise of the world and the whispers of my own desires. Give me the wisdom to understand your will and the courage to follow where you lead. In Jesus' name. Amen.
