Matthew 5:41,
"And whoever compels you to go a mile, go with him two."
Think
Go the Extra Mile Gumby was a green, clay animated character introduced in the 50's. One of his main characteristics was that he could be bent in all directions, enabling him to assume any position that his owner wanted to shape him into. God created you to do amazing things, but only when you allow yourself to be flexible in his hands. Today's scripture challenges us to be flexible by going the extra mile. A Roman Mile back in biblical times was over 15 football fields in length, so this was no easy task. But as Christ-followers, we should willingly do more than we're asked, trusting that God will help us go beyond our limitations. Jesus demonstrated this as he gave everything he had, which should inspire us to do the same. "Anything, everything or nothing at all" is a phrase you will hear repeatedly at our church because it's a value statement that we live by. The next time you are asked to go the extra mile, don't dig your heels in, but instead be as flexible as Gumby and go the extra mile!
Act
Put today's devotional into practice by doing twice as much as you are asked the next time someone asks for a helping hand. You will be more like Jesus when you do.
Pray
God, forgive me for the times in my past when I have not given my all and gone the extra mile. Help me to remember this passage and give more than is required of me when my family, my church or my business comes calling. I want my life to be an example of serving just like you served. I pray this in Jesus' name, Amen.
