    Your First Thirst

    Read

John 4:13-14, "Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.'"

    Think

"Stop looking for the mortal to do what only the immortal can." What are you thirsty for right now in your life? Is it an opportunity at work? Is it someone's attention? Is it a major change or breakthrough? In this verse, Jesus was speaking to a woman who thirsted for someone to love her. She had been with multiple men, none of whom loved her. And now she was with another man, most likely heading down the same dead-end path. There's nothing wrong with being thirsty and having your desires satisfied. But where we get messed up is when those things become our first thirst. And the reason it messes us up is because nothing satisfies the ultimate thirst for love, forgiveness, and purpose in our lives like  Jesus. The Bible tells us that God gives us the desires of our heart. So when we thirst for him first, he will satisfy our deepest desires. And when we trust him fully, he will give us straight paths to a fulfilled life.

    Act

Make God your first thirst. Give him the first of your week by going to church; give him the first of your day by spending time in reading the Bible and praying; bring him the first 10% (the tithe) of your income to his church. Seek Him first when an opportunity or challenge comes your way today.

    Pray

God, thank you for meeting me right where I am. I place my trust in you and know that you have a plan and purpose just for me. Help me to make you my first thirst and thank you for the satisfaction I know I'll find.
