    The Table

Isaiah 25:6, "On this mountain the Lord Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine..." Luke 14:15, "When one of those at the table with Him heard this, he said to Jesus, ‘Blessed is the one who will eat at the feast in the kingdom of God.'"

    Think

Tables are a staple of life. We gather around to exchange stories, share meals, and connect with those we love. But a table is more than just furniture. In a very real way, a table represents the church where hungry hunks of humanity come to be fed spiritually, to sink their teeth into the ultimate food, God's Word. As we gather in worship, we take our seat at the table, where the pastor serves the bread of life in a creative and compelling way. Just like a fine meal served in several courses, the table metaphor is used throughout Scripture. In the Old Testament, the prophets spoke of God preparing an ultimate feast for His people. David, in the midst of extreme distress and hunger, praised God for "preparing a table in the presence of my enemies." In the New Testament, Jesus chose to gather with all kinds of people around tables, many of whom were known sinners, prostitutes, tax collectors, and societal outcasts. And at the Last Supper, He reclined with His disciples around the table and said, "I am the bread of life." Every weekend we have the opportunity to take our seats at the table and dine on the bread of life, the cosmic carbohydrate that fuels our hearts to discover what God wants us to do. Are you regularly gathering around this ultimate table?

    Pray

Dear Heavenly Father, I praise You for calling me to take a seat at Your table. Thank You for Your Word that reminds me of who I was, who I am now, and who You desire me to become. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
