    Serving Earthly Masters

    Read

Ephesians 6:5, "Servants, respectfully obey your earthly masters but always with an eye to obeying the real master, Christ. Don't just do what you have to do to get by, but work heartily, as Christ's servants doing what God wants you to do."

    Think

Serving the real master, Christ! When taking a job, an individual voluntarily gives his mind and effort to their employer for a set amount of time called "the work week." The question is, "How should the Christ-follower conduct himself toward the one who employs them?" Our Scripture verse reveals two objectives that should shape that conduct. The first objective is the activity which God requires in this relationship between you and your employer. That activity is obedience. Christian employees are under obligation to those who hire them to do what their employer expects. It is really very simple. Do what the boss says. If what they are asking you to do is not going to cause you to be disobedient to Christ, then obey them. The second objective is the attitude in which that activity is to be performed. That attitude is loyalty. You are to work as unto Christ, and your supreme concern is your loyalty to him. As a Christian, you don't work to merely please your boss, but also to please the Lord. You work knowing that the eye of the Lord is upon you and, as such, you do so with a desire for his approval. Work with the same enthusiasm you would work with if Jesus was the one sitting at the boss's desk!

    Act

Throughout the week, write down the words that define your attitude toward your boss. If you discover words that reveal a bad attitude, ask God to show you what is the root of that attitude. Repent of that attitude and commit to obedience to your employer and loyalty to Christ.

    Pray

Dear God, my life, especially my work life, is before you. I choose to do what my boss says and to do so as unto you. My loyalty is to you and I work to please you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
