In 1965 Mick Jagger first sang the now-classic Rolling Stones' song, "I Can't Get No Satisfaction." Fifty-four years later the song continues to resonate with millions who, like Jagger himself, never seem to be satisfied. Why? Is it possible that we are all trying to find satisfaction in all the wrong things? King Solomon, who wrote today's scripture verse, was probably the wealthiest man who ever lived. He was known for his great wisdom as well as his awe-inspiring building projects. He experienced every possible pleasure – personal and professional – in life. He had it all and yet he found no satisfaction. He writes that all his pursuits were like trying to grab smoke. They left him with nothing! What can be learned from Solomon? Real and lasting satisfaction will never be found in the pursuit of ambition, things, wealth or even pleasures in this life. None of those things are wrong, in and of themselves, but Solomon would later write that true satisfaction is only found when one shifts his loyalty to God and obeys his way of doing life. It's pursuing Christ as your first priority that will give meaning to everything else in your life.

Act

Write down those accomplishments or things in life that you are pursuing, that you hope will bring lasting satisfaction and contentment to your life. Now admit that these pursuits will never bring ultimate satisfaction. Admit to God that true satisfaction is only found in a life that is submitted to God and his way of doing life.

Pray

Heavenly Father, I have been trying to find satisfaction in (confess your list from above). I realize that many of these things are not necessarily bad, but they will never give me the satisfaction that I desire. I choose today and every day to submit my life to you and to be obedient to your ways of doing life. Amen.
