    Don't Buy the Lie

    Read

James 1:16-17, "Don't be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights who does not change like the shifting shadows."

    Think

Don't receive the deceive! We've all felt that familiar gut-punch, that disgusted and shameful feeling that arises after being duped or deceived. So, imagine how awful and horrified Adam and Eve felt after they "received the deceive!" They lived in paradise, in a God-given place of perfection when Satan tricked them into believing God was holding out on them. Despite having only experienced God's goodness, they willfully disobeyed. And in an instant, they were introduced to the same fear, shame and regret, that is so prevalent in our lives today. In today's verse, James is warning us to not buy Satan's lies! Why? Because the enemy's sole mission is to distract us with what may seem great now to stymie us from receiving God's best for our future. God never changes, and his truth can never be tarnished. Overcoming deception begins and ends with placing our trust in God, the author of truth, who gave his only Son in exchange for our sins. His complete devotion to us knows no limits. So, when we fix our focus on Jesus, the enemy is powerless to wreak havoc in our lives. How great is that!

    Act

Recall the last time you were deceived. What were the contributing factors that led to your deception? What have you learned and what precautions are you taking going forward? It's important to have a plan in place and a great place to start is by reading Ephesians 6:10-18 and remembering that God has already given you everything you need to win!

    Pray

Dear Lord, thank you for providing me with everything I need to stand firm against the enemy's lies. I know that the more I seek you, the less likely I am to be deceived. Help me to focus on the path you've placed before me without distraction or delay. Because I know your goodness and perfect love are always working for my good and your glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
