James 1:27,
"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."
Think
Are you a two-way player? In basketball, the term "two-way player" is used to describe those who are elite on both offense and defense. Coaches love these types of players because they are trustworthy and make huge contributions to the game. In today's verse, James' game plan challenges all of us to be "two-way players" by actively striving for more
compassion and
character. Compassion is love in action. Following Jesus' example, we are to show compassion to those in need, even if they can't repay us for our kindness. As two-way players, we must also demonstrate Christ-like character. We do not live according to the world's standards, but solely by God's standards. Therefore, our ultimate goal is to grow more and more like Jesus. God gives us opportunities
daily to show compassion and test our character, so be willing and ready! This will enable you to keep your eyes off yourself as you look around for those in need and look up to the One who transforms hearts.
Act
Ask yourself these two penetrating questions: 1. Do I really have compassion for the least, the last and the lost? 2. Have I let the world influence who I am, or am I living a life that upholds Christ-like integrity?
Pray
Dear God, thank you for showing me the importance of demonstrating Christ-like compassion and character in my life. I pray that when given the opportunity, I'm reminded to align my heart with your desires. Thank you for your compassion in my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
