    Joel 2:12-13, “The Lord says, ‘Turn to Me now, while there is time. Give Me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.’ Return to the Lord your God, for He is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish.”

    Think

    Chances are you are among the many who rarely or never fast. It may not be because you haven’t heard about fasting or that you don’t want to do it, you just never actually get around to putting down the fork. Food is so pervasive in our society that we eat even when we don’t want to. So what is fasting? Fasting is voluntarily going without food or any other regularly enjoyed, good gift from God for the sake of some spiritual purpose. It is a spiritual discipline that helps us dial into God’s desires. When we do without something we need, like food, we refocus from the food that sustains life to the Source that gives life, God. Whenever a fast is recorded in the Bible, it is followed by a season of growth and blessing. The goal is to fine-tune your focus on what really matters, which is your relationship with God. As you fast, remember, the idea is not to be legalistic, but realistic. Focus on the details of connecting and aligning your walk with God. Bon Appétit!

    Dear God, as I begin this fast, help me to see very clearly the areas of my life that need refocus. My desire and promise to You is to make the necessary changes as a result of what You show me over the next 20 days. Amen.
