Philippians 3:14-16, "I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained."
Think
Wedding ceremonies consist of two deaths and one union. Man and wife must each die to themselves as they enter into this sacred covenant as one flesh. Dying to self within marriage takes sacrifice and the willingness to put one another's needs first. This speaks volumes to the astronomical divorce rate in today's culture. It's hard to put selfishness aside and work for what's worth fighting to save! In this passage, Paul tells us that we must "press on" to win the prize – which is intimacy with God. The same is true in our earthly marriage relationship. We must "press on" to experience intimacy with each other. And, when we achieve this earthly goal, we will experience heavenly gains! Thomas Edison said, "Success is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration". Are you pressing on toward the goal of marital success? Do you pray together, attend church regularly, prioritize date night, and extend forgiveness? These things are crucial to thriving – not merely surviving – marriages, because the 10% of inspiration (sexual attraction and intimacy) will not be able to withstand the storms of life. Due to God's love He has set up your marriage to win, but it's up to you to do the work – so work it, because it's worth it!
Act
Make a list of two things you can do this week to help your marriage thrive. Allow God to speak into your heart as you focus on how you can "press on" in your marriage.
Pray
Father God, thank You for being willing to work for what's worth fighting for. You are the ultimate prize and I aim to press on toward my goal of being more like Jesus. I ask for guidance and discernment to stay on the path You've set before me. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
