"Don't use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them."
Think
Did you know that you have the power of life and death? Perhaps that comes as a surprise. Simply put, you have the power to change someone's life simply by the words you speak. Because what you say can either build them up or tear them down. This is especially true when it comes to marriage. At some point, every married couple has said these words: "I wish I hadn't said that." Because who wants to speak words of death to the person they pledged their lives to in marriage? So how do we avoid the kill shot? How can we speak life into our marriage? In a word - Praise! Have you ever spent time with a couple who praises the other in public? It's not for show, but to sincerely express their gratitude for one another. Their mutual words of praise set a wonderful example of how to speak the way God intended: to build up, not to tear down; to bless, not to curse; to give life, not to destroy. So, which will it be? Life or death? Your words matter, so choose them wisely.
Act
Find a couple who models what it means to build and encourage one another with their words, and follow their example. Walk with the wise and it will begin to rub off.
Pray
Dear God, I want my words to give life to everyone, especially my spouse. Help me to think about what I say long before the words leave my mouth. In Jesus' name, Amen.
