1 Samuel 7:3, "If you are returning to the Lord with all your hearts, then rid yourselves of the foreign gods...and commit yourselves to the Lord and serve Him only..."

    Think

The popular TV show "American Idol" is definitely a fan favorite for our culture. Contestants from all over the world have the opportunity to sing in front of celebrity judges to showcase their talent. But, that title applies to more than just great new artists. It's crazy to think about how often America worships idols. Our culture today places people, status, social media, body image and many other things in the place of God. It's easy to begin to look to these for satisfaction and value. This is nothing new because God's people (the Israelites) did the exact same thing. Today's verse was challenging the Israelites, and us, to get rid of the idols in our lives and commit to the one true God! This is such an important concept that the first of the ten commandments that God gave Moses was, "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me!" We can always put idols in the place of God. However, we will experience our best life when we put the God who created us, called us, and loves us into first place! Make it a priority to serve, obey and trust him with your whole heart.

    Act

Evaluate the idols you have in your life. What is the thing or person you have to check with before you choose to obey God? What are you putting in the way of where God needs to be? It could be popularity, body image, social media, status, work, spouse, kids, significant other and many other things. Take action today to put this idol in its rightful place and replace it with God and his Word.

    Pray

Dear God, help me to see the idols in my life. I know that you're the only one I need to put as my #1 in everything I do, say, think and act. Thank you for creating me and loving me. Help me to have a heart that is committed to serving you in everything I do. In Jesus' name, Amen.
