Read:

Isaiah 9:6, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Think:

Today we have gender reveals and baby name social announcements. But that can’t compare to the fact that 700 years before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah gave the people of Israel Jesus’ names! And those names gave them hope in a world filled with darkness. Place yourself in the Jewish people’s position — rampant suffering, uncontrolled political ineptness, injustice everywhere. It seemed hopeless. But then they heard of someone coming who would change things forever.

We hear the names Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace —and the expectant sighs of people everywhere erupt. Wonderful Counselor refers to the king’s role as the nation’s political guide, it speaks to His wisdom and direction. Mighty God places Jesus’ military strength on display. He will protect you! Everlasting Father is a title that refers to His love and concern for His children. He is not a distant parent. He never leaves us. Prince of Peace brings the security and safety that comes from all the other titles. He delivers a completeness. Only Jesus!

Act:

Wonderful Counselor- Today ask Jesus to help and guide you in the circumstances you find yourself in.

Mighty God- Ask God for His power and boldness!

Everlasting Father- Ask your heavenly Father to comfort you today, to be your dad.

Prince of Peace- Ask God to bring harmony to situations today that need His presence.

Jesus, thank You for fulfilling all Your roles, then and now. Thank You for being MY Mighty God. Amen.
