The More Monster

Read

Ecclesiastes 2:11, "Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun."

Think

Solomon, the wealthiest man on the planet, asked God for wisdom. Not only was he rich, but he was also the sharpest tool in the shed. The smarts that he received from God allowed him to come to a stunning conclusion about a horrible creature that sinks his teeth into almost every soul: The More Monster. The More Monster is never satisfied, always wanting what seems to be just out of reach. Have you fallen prey to the More Monster? Have you let materialism and envy become your master? Do you find yourself constantly dissatisfied, eyeing what others have instead of appreciating what you have? If so, it's time to escape this creature's clasp and wake up to the truth of today's scripture. Don't waste your time running after the trivial things of life, because it's just like chasing after the wind. You will pursue, but never catch. Learn to be content by counting the many blessings God has given you. You can slay the More Monster by having a mindset of not acquiring more, but of appreciating more.

Act

Today, take a few minutes to stop and write down ten things you are thankful for. Whenever you take time to count the many blessings you have, the More Monster begins to fade out of sight.

Pray

God, thank you for generously giving these ten gifts to me. I know that every good and perfect gift comes from you, so I thank you for these. But I also want to ask your forgiveness for the many times that I have let the "desire for more" crowd out my appreciation for how you have already blessed me. Please replace my greed with gratitude. Amen.
