The Good Shepherd

Read

Isaiah 53:6, "We're all like sheep who've wandered off and gotten lost. We've all done our own thing, gone our own way. And God has piled all our sins, everything we've done wrong, on him."

Think

Lost and Found The scripture above gives a not-so-complimentary comparison between humans and sheep. Sheep don't have a reputation for being very smart. As followers and grazers, they are known to be easily drawn off-course. That's why it's important for them to have a shepherd watching over them. Human beings also seem to have an innate ability to go astray. We begin grazing in areas of life that we should never venture into. And before we know it, we're being chased by predators and running toward a cliff! The great news is that we have a "Good Shepherd," as Jesus describes himself in John 10:11. He laid down his life for our sake. And in Luke 15:4-7, he tells us that if he has a hundred sheep, he isn't willing to let even one go astray. He will leave the ninety-nine to find and bring back the one. What a comforting thought to know God cares so much about us, his sheep, that he would sacrifice everything to make sure we are found.

Act

Think about Jesus' last moments. Write a message thanking him for enduring the pain and giving his life by dying on a cross for our sins.

Pray

Heavenly Father, "thank you" doesn't seem to be enough for the sacrifice you made for me. I never want to take for granted what you have done to make sure I was found and protected from the enemy. Continue to guide me and direct me on the path you have for me. Help me to always hear my Good Shepherd's voice and follow your direction for my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
