Read:

Matthew 14:28-31"‘Lord, if it's you,’ Peter replied, ‘tell me to come to you on the water.’

‘Come,’ he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ he said, ‘why did you doubt?’"

Think:

Have you ever placed an address in your Google maps, or whatever app you use, and noticed the highlighted route was a rambling, jagged mess? You probably thought, whatever happened to a straight line? Then, of course, you acknowledge that the straight line would take you through the woods, over houses and rivers where no road exists. So often, our lives are like the navigation route; they are not straight paths. We often try to override God's navigational system, recalculating, circling in confusion, and seeking a path of our own.

Look at Peter. He was invited by God himself to walk on water, an unconventional route. His would be a wavy course, not the smooth one that most would wish for. But God’s unusual, alarming invitation included his presence, which is what the invitation looks like for us. Sometimes our faith journey is marked by courage and determination to stay on a winding path. Sometimes faith looks like tenacity by remaining on the divergent, uncomfortable trail. But at its core, faith is the knowledge and trust that God is in control. God knows our future, and we can rest on the journey.

Apply:

Today, instead of being distracted by the meandering journey, quietly look to Jesus. Call out to him when you are uncertain about what lies beyond the bend. He is there.

Pray:

God, you are the guide of my life. I trust you. Help me surrender my will to your will. Amen.
