Love Me Some Me

Read:

Psalm 24:1 “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it...”

Proverbs 15:33 “Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the Lord, and humility comes before honor.”

Think:

“Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues. Hence, in the soul in which this virtue does not exist, there cannot be any other virtue except in mere appearance.” St. Augustine

It’s no surprise that the word humble comes from the same Latin root, humilitas, which means “to be brought to a low place.” This can be done one of two ways: either voluntarily through our own actions and disposition, or through circumstances we experience. Humility is usually bought with a price.

Why is it important for us to be humble? What are the benefits of lowering ourselves? Christ was the greatest among us, yet he was the most humble of all (Philippians 2:8). Humility is a heart attitude, not an outward demeanor. One can put on an outward show of humility but still have a heart full of pride and arrogance. However, true humility is a deep reliance and trust in God. Knowing that his goodness and mercy will follow and cover us, allows us to overcome pride and arrogance.

Apply:

Instead of believing that we are the ultimate and peak of existence, let’s acknowledge the greatness of God. Today, choose to serve or submit to someone else. Allow our dependence on a good and loving God to shine through to others.

Pray:

Heavenly Father, thank you for always having my best in mind. Search my heart for any shred of pride and help me live a life of humble and complete surrender to you. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
