1 Samuel 2:3,
"Do not keep talking so proudly or let your mouth speak such arrogance, for the Lord is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed."
Think
Hannah was taunted and "mom-shamed" for her inability to conceive a child, but she never retaliated. How did she do it? How did she not lose control and explode? Today's verse gives us the answer: she poured her anger and hurt out to God and trusted in his all-knowing power. She trusted him to bring justice and to work on her behalf. It was this meekness - strength under control - that gained her favor with God. In our current culture, this "telling God" approach isn't typically the first choice. Instead, pride often causes us to shame or retaliate against others through ridicule, taunts, and slander. We forget that these are actions and words that God despises. Our first response shouldn't be retaliation. Instead, it should be to tell God, to acknowledge what he already knows and trust that he hears us, sees our hearts, and gives us strength. God already knows your pain – and he understands it – so talk to him about the situation. Trust that he loves you, cares about you and has your best interest at heart.
Act
Think of an injustice you have experienced. Instead of planning a retaliation, spend some time writing about it or talk to God about your feelings. Ask him to give you the strength to hold your tongue and, if necessary, the wisdom to appropriately address the issue.
Pray
Heavenly Father, thank you for always being available to listen. I trust that you know how to deal with these issues better than I do. So, help me to hold my tongue and remember that I am not weak, but strong in your power. In Jesus' name, Amen.
