Good Discipline

Read:

Hebrews 12:10-11 “They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”

Think:

Disciplining a child appropriately is a challenging and often unpleasant task, yet it remains a crucial aspect of parenting. Discipline is a fundamental skill that every parent must acquire; it serves as an essential tool. It's important to understand that discipline is not about inflicting pain or punishment; rather, it's a means of imparting the values of right and wrong. While it may appear painful to the child when they are reprimanded for not following the rules, it's far more beneficial for them to grasp these lessons in the context of minor infractions, as this can help prevent more significant transgressions in the future.

Discipline, at its core, is the process of learning that, although something may seem enticing, pleasurable, or fun in the moment, it may not be the wisest or most “righteous” choice. This is why we have commandments and rules—to provide guidance, to provide boundaries. Through discipline, children begin to internalize these principles and develop a moral compass that will serve them well throughout their lives. Good discipline provides guardrails and safety for our kids.

Apply:

Are you doing your child a disservice by not disciplining them? You can correct that today. Set expectations by establishing rules and consequences. Follow through! Be consistent.

Pray:

Heavenly Father, help me to be consistent with disciplining my kids. Give me wisdom and knowledge that can only come from you to know how to shape their lives and mold them into people who love you. Help me guide them. Give me balance. In Jesus' name. Amen.
