Freedom from Sin But a Slave

Read:

Romans 6:18 “And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.”

John 8:34 “Jesus answered them, 'Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.'”

Think:

Have you ever observed how one sin can lead to another? Sin has a snowball effect, regardless of its nature, as it possesses a binding power that can enslave us. In John 8:34, Jesus metaphorically portrays the relationship between a master and a slave to illustrate how sin takes ownership of us and keeps us in chains. Similar to a slave's lack of autonomy and will, sin dictates our actions when it becomes our master. In some instances, we may even nourish sin because we find pleasure in it.

However, the moment we embrace Christ as our Savior, repenting of our sins, we receive his forgiveness, and the chains of sin are shattered. Through the redeeming grace of God, we gain the power to serve and be devoted to "doing good" and pursuing a life of holiness.

Apply:

In what way is my life different now than before Christ? Is there a difference?

Pray:

Jesus, thank you for setting me free from the shackles of sin and allowing me to serve you. Show me how to live for you a life that is pleasing and one that glorifies you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
