Eyes Wide Open

Read:

Matthew 6:22-23 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!”

Think:

Oh, be careful, little eyes, what you see. Oh, be careful, little eyes, what you see. There’s a Father up above looking down in tender love. Oh, be careful, little eyes, what you see.

The eyes truly reflect the state of our souls. What we allow ourselves to see has a profound impact on our inner being. Our eyes are naturally drawn to what our hearts desire, but they also possess the power to shape and drive our hearts. They are not neutral observers; they hold influence over us. By filling our eyes with what is true, right, pure, lovely, and admirable, we can strengthen our faith, deepen our love, and intensify our happiness. However, if we let our eyes wander aimlessly, our hearts will quickly follow, leading us astray and causing our downfall.

If we have neglected to guard our eyes and keep them healthy, it is not too late to start. First, let us saturate our eyes with the Word of God. If we want to prioritize God in our lives, we must invite him in first. Before we expose ourselves to the distractions of the day, let us purposefully choose to seek him. Allow a fresh vision of God through his Word to be the first wonder you behold each day, overshadowing and illuminating all others. Immerse yourself in Scripture to the point where you begin to see God's presence all around you.

Compare the time you spend in prayer with the time you spend in front of screens—a comparison that can humble anyone. When we evaluate the hours dedicated to our phones or televisions alongside the time we spend on our knees in prayer, what does it reveal about the focus of our eyes and the condition of our hearts?

Apply:

Focus on his Word and speak to him, and your eyes will see him around you.

Pray:

Jesus, I want to see you in my daily life. Help me to be aware of the dangers of what is around me and the hazards I can place myself in by viewing something that isn't from you. In Jesus' name, Amen.
