Doubts

Read:

John 20:25-28 “So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord!’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.’ A week later his disciples were in the house again, and

Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you!’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.’ Thomas said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’”

Think:

The saying goes, "The evil deeds of men outlive them; the good is often buried with their bones." We tend to judge someone based on a single mistake, known for one error, one lapse in judgment, or one flaw. This was Thomas's fate. Nowadays, a "doubting Thomas" refers to someone who is skeptical. But in truth, Thomas's doubt led him to devotion.

Jesus did not scold or criticize him for doubting. Christ knew that as Thomas wrestled with his questions and examined the facts, he would become the most stalwart disciple, with a strong and resilient faith. Early Christian writers say Thomas spread the gospel in India, bringing Christianity to its people. He was killed by a Hindu priest, dying a martyr for Jesus.

Do you have doubts? Doubt your doubts and feed your faith. Keep trusting, following, serving, praying. God will show himself.

Apply:

If you are struggling with doubts today, know that it is normal. You are loved and not condemned. Jesus wants to point you toward the truth. Trust the Holy Spirit to guide you as you speak to him.

Pray:

God, remove my doubt and increase my belief. Please allow the Holy Spirit to show me the truth and convict my heart of the evidence of your goodness and your glory. Open my eyes to what you are doing around me. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
