1 Samuel 4:3a, "When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, ‘Why did the Lord bring defeat upon us today before the Philistines?'"

Think

Israel was experiencing a great defeat at the hands of the Philistines in today's scripture. So, they called a holy huddle to figure out how they, God's chosen people, could be defeated by these pagans. Why did God allow this to happen? Not every situation will end well. That's when we, like the Israelites, want to cry out, "Why me, Lord?" At that moment, our perspective can be the difference between allowing circumstances to overtake us or experiencing a divine breakthrough. We will have the right perspective if we turn our focus away from the negative circumstances and turn toward God, who can bring good out of any experience. Before asking that three-word question, take an honest and humble assessment of your perspective and ask "How will you use this, Lord?" God will be glorified even in difficulty. When we have a humble heart, we can glorify and celebrate him amid the seeming defeat.

Act

What circumstance has recently left you asking "Why Me, Lord?" Write a letter to God about it. With a humble heart, ask him how he wants to use the circumstance for his glory. Celebrate that even in the midst of hardship.

Pray

Heavenly Father, thank you for reminding me of your power even when life doesn't go the way I want it to. You know I want to ask "Why me?" in those times. Please help me to do so with a humble heart. I want to be used for your purpose. In all things, may you be glorified. In Jesus' name, Amen!
