Walls

Read

Matthew 14:29-21, "Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!' Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him."

Think

We all have "walls" that separate where we want to be and where we are: fear, insecurity, addiction, infertility, uncertainty, depression, to name a few. We desperately long to get to the other side, but the problems we face often seem insurmountable. And, then, on a larger scale, we see the walls we face as a nation - COVID-19, racism, riots, division - and it feels they are impossible to overcome.

In today's reading, Peter found himself in a similar situation when Jesus called him to walk on water. He took an incredible step of faith only to be met with doubt and fear. The moment he took his eyes off Jesus and, instead, focused on the "wall" of wind, what happened? He started to drown. Think about it - Jesus was literally in front of him, and his faith momentarily waned. Isn't it funny how that happens?

How often do you find yourself staring at the wall before you instead of focusing on the One who tore down the ultimate wall between life and death? Borders do not limit God; there are no boundaries He cannot cross. Although it may not happen within your time frame, choose to keep your eyes on Jesus, and you'll sing glory as the wall comes crashing down!

Act

Take a moment to list some of the walls that seem to be staring you down today. Choose to give them to God and keep your eyes on Him instead!

Pray

Jesus, I choose to keep my eyes on You and not my problems! Awake my faith, help me see Your miracles, and use me to be a part of rescue stories in others' lives by sharing this hope! Amen.
