James 3:13, "Do you want to be counted wise, to build a reputation for wisdom? Here's what you do: Live well, live wisely, live humbly. It's the way you live, not the way you talk, that counts."
Think about a person in your life that you go to when you need advice. What sets them apart from others? Chances are you have probably watched how that person lives. Perhaps others have spoken of their reputation for being wise and trustworthy. That person has lived a life that reflects good character. They look to God for direction rather than the current cultural bias. They walk the talk.
It's said that talk is cheap, but actions are priceless. A person with credibility and character understands this all too well. A person especially known for their character, Billy Graham, once said, "When wealth is lost, nothing is lost; when health is lost, something is lost; when character is lost, all is lost."
In today's verse, James reminds us just how important it is to live out our lives in a pleasing manner to God. A life lived with godly character is one that's watched with curiosity. It's a beacon of hope that draws others to the One that gives wisdom, Jesus Christ.
Be curious. Pinpoint someone who has a good character that you admire, and ask them how they've built such a great reputation.
Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your Word, the guidebook to my life. Help me not just read and talk about what it says but also help me put it into action. Let my life be one that draws others to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
