Time to Grow Up

Read

Luke 2:52, "And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man."

Think

"Jesus became one of us in his life!" The Bible greatly details Jesus' birth and his earthly ministry from the age of 30-33. However, we don't know that much about his life in between. But here's what we do know! Although Jesus was fully God, he grew up as a regular kid who aimed to make his parents on earth, as well as his Father in heaven, proud. At the age of twelve, he greatly impressed the temple leaders with his knowledge and understanding of Scripture. The rest of his teenage and young adult years are summed up in the verse above: "he grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man." Is it possible that the lack of further detail is to help us to understand and identify with Christ's humanity? Is it to help us see what is important? In God's economy, life is about learning – not just obtaining knowledge – but also understanding how to apply it. That's what wisdom is: knowledge applied. Are you an incurable learner? Do you hunger to grow in God's wisdom and truth? It's never too late to realize that our best self, being who God wants us to be, comes to fruition when we are lifelong students of God's grace and relentless learners of his Word.

Act

What can you do to challenge yourself to learn each day? Memorizing Scripture is a great place to start. Throughout this week, seek to memorize one to two verses by writing them down and saying them aloud several times each day.

Pray

Dear Lord, thank you for sending Jesus to be the ultimate role model. Like him, I want to be an incurable learner. Forgive me for the times when I'm spiritually lazy and help me to excel as a lifelong student of your Word. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
