The Vow

Read

Genesis 28:20-22, "Then Jacob made a vow, saying, ‘If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear  so that I return safely to my father's household, then the Lord will be my God and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth."

Think

"When you do things God's way, you get God's results." As Jacob was on his journey, he realized that God was working on his behalf and moving in his life, so he responded with a vow: If God would promise to provide and protect him, he would give ten percent (the tithe) of all he had back to God. In this context "if" means "since." In other words, since Jacob knew God was going to provide everything he needed, then he was going to commit the first tenth of everything he had to God. Many of us wrestle with tithing. Maybe we don't see how ends will meet, or we simply have trouble trusting God. Or maybe we think what we give won't make a difference. It's important to remember that everything we have comes from God. He is our ultimate provider and source of everything we need. He doesn't need our money, but he does want us to trust him – with everything! When we're faithful with our finances, we'll have a front-row seat to life change – in our life and the lives of others - because we're giving God's way!
