Protect the Unity

Read

Romans 14:19, "Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification."

Think

Paul is addressing the need for Gentile and Jewish believers to get along so that the church would not be fragmented along racial lines. He exhorts them to pursue harmony among each other. They are not to take lightly the things that make for peace with each other. He tells them to make every effort to protect the unity of the church! As a church family, we, too, need to agree to use all our energy in getting along with one another. This is a pursuit we cannot be casual about. Strive to build up each other with encouraging words. Stop dragging one another down by finding fault or taking offense over every real or imagined affront. Above all, follow the leadership and refuse to gossip. There is one more thing we need to do to guard the unity of the church. If we recommend the church, we need to also defend the church. When false accusations concerning your church are said in your presence, do not let them go unchallenged. Respectfully refute the lie and positively state the truth.

Act

If you have issues with someone in your church, make every effort ASAP to resolve the issue. Pray for the leadership of your church and resolve to be a peacemaker, not a troublemaker.

Pray

Heavenly Father, I thank you for my church. I thank you for the leaders and ask that you give them wisdom. Make me aware of anything I do or say that would be divisive. I choose this day and every day to pursue harmony among my church family. In Jesus' name, Amen.
