Proverbs 28:13,  "Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy."

"What we cover God uncovers. What we uncover God covers." After eating the forbidden fruit, in rebellion to God's commands, Adam and Eve were suddenly aware of their nakedness. In a state of panic, they tried to cover themselves with fig leaves and hide. When God asked them where they were, it wasn't because He didn't know; He wanted them to confess. Human nature hasn't changed. In our absurdity, we still think we can hide from our all-seeing and all-knowing God. Unconfessed sin, though, leads to dysfunction and blocks us from discovering God's function for our lives. Why? Because rebellion puts us at odds with God. Yet, if we confess, God will cover us with His mercy and grace. However, confession without repentance makes our words meaningless. There's more to it than confessing our sins. We must turn from them. James 5:16 tells us, "Confess your sins to one another... that you may be healed." Ironically, it's often harder for us to confess our shameful acts to other people, than it is to our perfect and holy God! We fear what they might think if they were privy to our secret thoughts. But something extremely valuable happens when we confess our sinfulness and dysfunction to a trusted friend or Christian counselor. It's a God-given accountability system that helps us to put our words into action. As Christ-followers, we should strive to be people of integrity. This means being the same person in private as we are in public. Praying with friends, being transparent, and encouraging one another to live under the authority of God's Word is vital to becoming exactly who He wants us to be!

Lord, thank You for still loving me in spite of all my mistakes and failures. Work within me to be a person of integrity as I seek to work through my dysfunction. Reveal to me any unconfessed sin that I have unknowingly committed. In Jesus' name, Amen.
