Make the Most Out of the Mundane

Read

1 Samuel 17:34-37, "But David said to Saul, ‘Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.'"

Think

When David was a shepherd, he performed a lot of mundane tasks. As he spent hours alone with the sheep, you know he hoped and dreamed of more. To make things worse, the mundane task of watching sheep was periodically interrupted by the deadly task of defending the sheep. As David watched the sheep, he made the most of the mundane moments. He didn't run away from his responsibilities. He stayed faithful when there was little chance of reward or recognition. And because David was faithful, God prepared him for a time that would lead to great reward and recognition. Remember: God is preparing you for what He has prepared for you. Just because the day seems mundane, does not mean it is meaningless. God can use your faithfulness in the smallest of tasks to prepare you for the greatest of moments!

Act

What is a mundane task in your schedule today? If accomplishing that mundane task with excellence was essential to your being prepared for something great God had in store for you, how would your attitude and effort toward that task change?

Pray

Heavenly Father, thank You for mundane moments of life. I believe You are using those times to prepare me for what You have prepared for me. Please help me stay faithful now so I am prepared for what You have planned next. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
