Lasting Impression

Read

Mark 14:8-9, "She did what she could. She poured perfume on My body beforehand to prepare for My burial. Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."

Think

We remember Mark Twain as a humorist and pioneer of American literature. We celebrate Harriet Tubman's bravery in helping runaway slaves escape to freedom through the Underground Railroad. Julia Childs is famous for her high-pitched voice and love of helping others learn to cook French cuisine. We memorialize Mary, a friend and devoted follower of Christ, for "doing what she could" after making a selfless sacrifice at a critical moment. Although most of us will never achieve such notoriety, we do all leave a lasting impression. We will all be remembered in some way - good or bad.

In today's reading, Jesus gives Mary the ultimate compliment! She recognized the value of Jesus' presence and chose to break a precious alabaster box containing valuable oil to anoint His head and feet. As the beautiful aroma wafted through the air, others in the room criticized her for "wasting" such a costly substance. But Jesus wasn't having it! Instead, He corrected them, saying her generosity will be remembered throughout the annals of time.

Her remarkable legacy gives us cause us to consider our own actions. How will you be remembered? Will you be known for having a sharp tongue and a selfish attitude? Or, will people call you Christ-filled, gracious, generous, loving, and kind? On that day when you meet Jesus face-to-face, will He say, "You did what you could"?

Act

In remembrance of Mary, do something selfless and kind today. Buy someone a coffee or meal. Offer to help an elderly neighbor or write a handwritten note to a friend. And if you aren't already, help build God's Kingdom by serving in the local church.

Pray

Heavenly Father, Thank You for presence and provision. I want to be remembered as a devoted Christ-follower, for fulfilling the purpose You've so graciously placed on my life. Help me walk in obedience so that others see Jesus in me. In His name, Amen.
