God's Escape Plan

Read

1 Corinthians 10:13, "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it."

Think

Avoid the trap! Basketball teams often employ a defensive tactic to trap an opposing offensive player. When it works, the offensive player is cornered and it limits his or her ability to effectively advance the ball. In order to avoid the trap, the coach warns the team as he sees it unfolding. He calls out instructions to lead them out of danger. This is a classic metaphor of what we all experience in life as well. The enemy sets the trap of temptation; though common to us all, they often show up unexpectedly. If we aren't careful to avoid it and fail to listen to God's direction, we will get cornered by the tempter's trap every time. The big difference is that the traps of life have much more devastating consequences than in basketball. Scripture reminds us that God has a game plan to help us avoid the enemy's traps. Our job is to listen to his direction and keep moving so we can escape unharmed.

Act

Recall an instance recently where you felt tempted. How did you avoid the trap? Now, recall a time you didn't avoid the trap. What could you have done differently in order to escape that temptation?

Pray

Heavenly Father, thank you for loving me enough to make sure I have a way out when I'm tempted. Help me to always listen to your instructions and direction. Give me the insight to know when the enemy sets the trap and the courage and discernment to do whatever it takes to avoid it. In Jesus's name, Amen.
