Be Salty

Read

Matthew 5:13,  "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot."

Think

We are the salt of the Earth! The Sermon On the Mount is considered to be the Greatest Sermon Ever Told. This week, we are going to look at the main points, the highlights of this meaningful message. Today's passage compares us to salt, which is used to season and preserve food. It is a challenge to all Christians to be difference-makers in the world. Like salt, we are called to be a seasoning agent bringing out the unique flavor of God's values to everyone we come in contact with. Salt also preserves food, just as we who are followers of Jesus are to help preserve the teachings of Jesus in our world. In biblical times, salt was valuable: the Greeks thought it contained divine ingredients, and the Romans treated it like money and often used it to pay their soldiers. In fact, a common phrase we use today originated back then when a soldier who didn't carry out his duties "was not worth his salt." Jesus used this word picture to remind us that not only does God value us, but we play a valuable role in showing others how faith in God can transform us as individuals and our world as a whole. We can make a difference!

Act

At lunch or dinner today, first taste your food, then add a little salt to it and notice the difference. Let this simple object lesson graphically remind you that we are called to also make a difference by seasoning the culture of our world by demonstrating God's teachings through our words and actions.

Pray

God, thank you for placing object lessons, like today's example of salt, in scripture to help me visualize how I need to be more effective in my daily connections with others. I pray that I will season other's lives as I strive to make a difference on your behalf. I pray this in Jesus' name, Amen.
